Obama Cancels Public Speech in Rio- Socialist & Union Groups: Obama “Persona Non Grata”,US Consulate Firebombed, Brazilian Anti-Obama Protest Photos & Videos [Update 6: Media Mum]

No reason specified for the cancellation, though perhaps Barack “citizen of the world” Obama wasn’t feelin’ the love. Ha ha ha.

(Breitbart) President Barack Obama has cancelled a public speech he was scheduled to deliver Sunday in a Rio square during his upcoming visit to Brazil, the US embassy in Brasilia said.
……
Obama instead will deliver remarks at Rio’s Municipal Theatre, the official said, without specifying whether it would be open to the public or exclusively for invited guests.

No explanation for the change of venue was given by the embassy. Brazilian authorities have laid out a heavy security presence for Obama’s two-day visit to South America’s largest nation, and police in Rio had closed numerous streets from midnight Thursday in preparation.

On Thursday, members of an advance US security team were seen inspecting the surroundings of Cinelandia, where anti-US banners could be seen hanging from a road-side fence.

Some social and union groups have declared Obama a “persona non grata” and called for a protest, accusing him of a “bellicose policy of occupation” in foreign countries, and of attacking people “in the name of the war on terror.” >>>

Public or not, Americans have every right to know what the Obama has to say on foreign soil.

Wow I can’t believe it “Some social and union groups have declared Obama a “persona non grata” and called for a protest”.

I can’t believe there are people in the World (not the United States) that obama and the union thugs can’t control. The Brazil people are sure smarter than the American people. The Brazilian people better watch out richard trumka & obama will send a buss load of thugs from Chicago down there and knock a few heads & maybe break a few knee caps.

Update:

The newspaper [Folha de Sao Paulo] said Obama was hoping to deliver a historic speech in Rio.

Good God Obama, get over your self, most everyone else has…

Update 3:

Verum Serum:

I couldn’t find this reported anywhere in the US media, and it doesn’t seem like some sort of minor incident either. From Ultimo Segundo in Brazil, with (imperfect) translation provided via Google Translate:

A protest against the visit to Brazil of U.S. president, Barack Obama, ended in confusion late on Friday (18) in the center of Rio de Janeiro. It should arrive to the country tomorrow evening and stay until the morning of Monday (21).

According to the Reserved Service of the 13th Military Police Battalion (Tiradentes Square), the protesters threw a Molotov cocktail at the U.S. Consulate. Part of the device reached a vigilante and his vest caught fire. To counter the confusion, MPs threw stun grenades and tear gas.

The PM said at least 13 people attending the protest were arrested and taken to the police station the avenue Gomes Freire (Precinct 5) in the center.

According to the corporation, about 100 people attended the protest. They are part of organizations like the CUT (Central Unica dos Trabalhadores), Sindipetro (Union of Oil), UNE (National Union of Students) and MST (Landless Movement).

The march began in front of the Candelaria church in downtown Rio, and followed by the Rio Branco Avenue until you reach the consulate. Were displayed banners reading “Obama, go home” and “Imperialism no! Obama, take the jaws of the pre-salt. All the solidarity of peoples in struggle.”

Protestants protest and conflict against Barack Obama in Rio de Janeiro Brazil Police said some protesters threw a Molotov cocktail against the U.S. consulate building in the center. The police threw tear gas and took shots with rubber bullets to contain the protest.

Update 5:

I was correct in assuming it was rubber bullets being fired against the protesters. And oddly enough the anti-Obama protesters are socialists. Oh the irony!

(Forbes) A molotov cocktail was launched in front of the US consulate in Rio de Janeiro late Friday in protest of the arrival of President Barack Obama, the O Globo newspaper in Rio reported.  Military police reacted by firing rubber bullets into the gathering of 200 at around 18:30 local time. A CBN news reporter suffered a minor injury from the shots and traffic was blocked.

“They came after us with clubs and tear gas and attacked,” according to protestor Thiago Hastenheiter. “They chased us through the streets and started firing rounds of rubber bullets.”

Police major Fabio Alessandro of the 13th Batallion of Rio’s military police said that the protestors, all left leaning social movements associated with the Socialist Workers Party, PSTU, did not have a permit to protest near the consulate along Avenida Rio Branco and had refused to disperse from the area. They wore the ubiquitous Che Guevera T shirt and carried American flags that said Go Home Obama. Most of the protests had been peaceful until two home-made molotov cocktails were let loose in the direction of the Consulate. A guard at the Consulate was partially burned and was sent to the emergency room at Souza Aguiar Hospital.

Fourteen protestors have been arrested.
……
What is most ironic about the Brazil protests is that the PSTU is a hard core socialist party in Brazil. While anti-Obama protests in the US consider Obama a socialist, the socialists in Brazil consider him a yankee capitalist, the bane of the Latin American left. >>>

Update 6:

All of the above and the US media remains mum. Bias what bias? Perish the thought. Heh.

Brazil’s Anti-Obama Riots Ignored by Media

A U.S. President beset by angry mobs screaming “Yankee Imperialist Go Home”, exploding Molotov cocktails, rubber bullets, tear gas, riot police.

In 2007 the MSNBC headline screamed “Protests greet Bush upon arrival in Brazil” and The Guardian one-upped it with “Angry crowds hunt Bush as protests mark start of Latin America tour”. Fast forward to 2011 as another U.S. President faces identical protests and riots. Funny thing, though, this time there is absolute stone cold silence on these protests and riots from the New York Times, CNN, AP, YahooNews, MSNBC, The Guardian, etc. (Politico to its credit reports it). >>>

But they were not conservatives you dolt. And that is the ENTIRE point. Your juvenile idiocy will not take away that fact. Let me try to explain it to you in simple terms. You see they greeted Bush in exactly the same way (see post update 6) It was not Bush that they despised it was the United States. Your silly diversion tactics do not go unnoticed. But I do realize that for someone like yourself it is hard to wrap your tiny little brain around hard facts.

And if you ever see tea partiers launching Molotov’s or trashing the United States flag, please do let me know. Until then, those acts regardless if you are willing to admit it or not — are trademarks of the left.

Recently, there has been a few internal struggle among the hard-left in Brazil. Also, the government will have to cut in the public worker system and they might be tempted to build up support toward radical leftists to protect their flank and provide some weight in the streets when they start the struggle. Along with that, Yousef might want to build them against the rightist forces drug paramilitaries and make Obama think twice about ignoring their opposition to their action on the security council.
