After Stunning Hollywood At #1 Is The Anti-Obama ’2016:Obama’s America’ Headed For Mainstream Success? [Update: Takes In 2.2 Million Friday, Earns More Per Screen Than 'Bourne', 'Expendables' Combined]

I must say, the timing for the release was impeccable. Obama must be beside himself. Ha.

(Entertainment Weekly) –A politically charged documentary called 2016: Obama’s America turned heads last weekend when it grossed a whopping $1.24 million out of just 169 theaters.
The $2.5 million independent film, which is being distributed by Utah-based Rocky Mountain Pictures, premiered in Houston six weeks ago and has recently enjoyed some extremely uncharacteristic box office behavior.

Here’s how things have gone for 2016: Obama’s America, though: Three weekends ago, 2016 earned $34,133 out of 10 theaters, which gave it a per theater average of $3,413 — not all that remarkable for a limited release. When it expanded into 61 theaters the next weekend, its per theater average did a funny thing: it jumped up to $5,202. Last weekend, the film experienced an even bigger expansion, into 169 theaters, and again, its per theater average substantially leapt up to $7,365.

Let’s be clear: this almost never happens.

FRIDAY 2 PM: The anti-Obama movie 2016 Obama’s America went into wider release around America today and is opening right now in first place at the domestic box office. That’s quite a feat since the Rocky Mountain Pictures political documentary is still playing in only 1,090 North American theaters – or about 1/3 as many theaters as actioner The Expendables 2 (3,355 theaters).

Both online ticket-sellers Fandango and MovieTickets.com showed advance buying for 2016 Obama’s America were accounting for 35% to 28% respectively before this weekend. The pic is based on conservative author and commentator Dinesh D’Souza’s New York Times bestselling 2010 book The Roots Of Obama’s Rage and co-directed by D’Souza and John Sullivan and produced by Academy Award winner Gerald R. Molen (co-producer of Schindler’s List).

On a related side note; regular readers may recall, that in June of this year, producer Gerald R. Molen was blacklisted from a high school graduation speech he was to give in his home state of Montana. And he believes the reasoning behind the last minute decision to cancel his appearance after he had already made the 90 minute trip to the school, was his involvement in the making of 2016: Obama’s America.

(Variety) –Anti-Obama pic earns more per screen than ‘Bourne,’ ‘Expendables’ combined; ‘Expendables’ top with $3.9 mil

Though it won’t win the frame, “2016″ is certainly the dark horse in this week’s race. A politically conservative adaptation of the book with the same title [CORRECTION: Adapted from Dinesh D’Souza's best seller The Roots Of Obama’s Rage -VH] , “2016″ just expanded to 1,071 locations and is drawing eyes from across the aisle for bipartisan B.O. bonuses.

Pic earned $2.2 million Friday, putting it on par with Focus’ “ParaNorman” in third, and repping a higher per screen average than “Expendables” and Universal’s second-placer “The Bourne Legacy” combined. While the film is performing alright in major cities, its strongest markets are in Louisiana, Kansas and Colorado.
