(CNN) — French police arrested a man Wednesday in connection with the weekend stabbing of a soldier in a business district of Paris, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The suspect, who is being named only as “Alexandre,” will turn 22 on Thursday, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said in a news conference broadcast by CNN affiliate BFMTV.

He converted to Islam when was about 18 years old, the prosecutor said.

The attack is believed to have been motivated by religious ideology because the suspect prayed less than 10 minutes beforehand, Molins said, and because it came only three days after a soldier was killed in London, by attackers who spoke of Islam.

In light of the evidence so far, police will continue to treat it as a terrorism incident, he said.

The serviceman, age 23, suffered wounds to the neck when the assailant attacked him from behind with a knife or box cutter as he patrolled the capital’s La Defense neighborhood.

The attacker stabbed the soldier several times, Molins said.

The suspect was identified through security camera footage and traces of DNA found on a juice bottle he left along with a sweater in a bag near the scene, the prosecutor said.

He had a prior record of petty crimes committed when he was under 18 and is known to have been rebellious in his youth, but was not known to French security services, Molins said.

His details were in the national police database because of an identity check made in 2007 when he was praying in the street. At that time, he did not appear to represent any threat, Molins said.

Alexandre was arrested outside the home of a friend close to Les Yvelines, near Paris, where he had been staying because he has no permanent address, Molins said. Authorities do not believe the friend is connected to the attack, he added.

The suspect can be held in police custody for 96 hours without charges being filed. Molins praised the work of French investigators in identifying him in only four days.

The soldier was hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

“The aim was to kill the soldier because he was a soldier,” Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told the CNN affiliate on Saturday. The attacker wanted “to kill a soldier who is in charge of French security,” he said.

The attacker was wearing a robe at the time of the assault, a police spokesman said. [...]

(Reuters) – A French soldier patrolling a business neighborhood west of Paris was stabbed in the neck and injured on Saturday by a man who fled the scene and is being sought by police, President Francois Hollande said.

The 23-year-old was patrolling in uniform with two other soldiers as part of France’s Vigipirate anti-terror surveillance plan when he was approached from behind around 6 p.m. and attacked with a knife or a box-cutter.

A police union spokesman said surveillance footage of the attacker showed him as tall and bearded, aged about 35, possibly of North African origin and wearing a white Arab-style tunic. [Muslim]

Hollande, in the Ethiopian city of Addis Ababa, commented on the stabbing to say police were hunting for the attacker but did not provide any details about his identity or any possible motivation for the attack.

“We still don’t know the exact circumstances of the attack or the identity of the attacker, but we are exploring all options,” Hollande told journalists.

Three days after a British was killed in a London street by two men who said they acted to avenge violence against Muslims, the attack near Paris raised questions about a possible copycat attempt to kill a French soldier.

Interior Minister Manuel Valls noted the similarity in an interview on France 2 TV saying the attacker was clearly trying to murder his victim, but he added that it was too early to offer any theories.

“Let’s be prudent for now,” Valls said of the attacker’s identity and motivations. “Everything is being done to arrest this individual.”

Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told journalists near the site of the attack: “The soldier was attacked because he is a soldier.”

“LOST A LOT OF BLOOD”

Pierre-Andre Peyvel, police prefect for the Hauts-de-Seine area west of Paris, said the soldier had lost a considerable amount of blood but would survive, and was being treated in a nearby military hospital. He was not named.

Witnesses near the commuter train station where the attack occurred gave conflicting descriptions of the fleeing suspect. One asserted on TV that he saw two men fleeing, while another said the scene was too confused to tell. [...]

Remember this French visitors? A massive protest against radical Islam held in France last November was IGNORED by the French ‘surrender monkey’ media. So maybe not huh?

Last year Mohammed Merah, a 23-year-old French-Algerian Islamist, murdered three French soldiers near the south west city of Toulouse during a killing spree which also claimed the lives of four civilians.

Merah himself was later shot dead by police but made it clear that he had also committed the murders in the name of Islam.

(Guardian) –French anti-terrorist police are searching for a man who stabbed a soldier in the neck in a business neighbourhood west of Paris before fleeing the scene on Saturday night.

The 25-year-old soldier, Private First Class Cedric Cordier, was patrolling in uniform with two other troops in a shopping area adjoining the station at La Défense as part of France’s Vigipirate anti-terror surveillance plan.

He was approached from behind at around 6pm and attacked with a knife or box-cutter. Cordier was wounded in the neck and is being treated in hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening. He lost a large amount of blood but his condition was said to be “satisfactory” on Sunday afternoon.

Initial reports said the attacker had said nothing and made no comment during the attack. He is still on the run. News agencies reported that police were hunting for a man who was about 30 years old and possibly of North African origin and bearded.

I find that very hard to believe.

The area where the attack took place was heavily monitored by CCTV run by the Paris transport network and shopping centre and police are sifting through footage. The investigation is being run by the state anti-terrorism unit.

The soldier who was attacked was walking behind other soldiers who did not witness the assailant before he fled. [...]

Update 2: The jihadist is on surveillance video praying to allah fubar before viciously attacking a uniformed soldier. He may not have screamed the islamic battle cry ‘allahu ackbar,’ but you can bet he was thinking it.

(Telegraph) –Police in Paris have obtained video footage of a bearded man “praying” shortly before he stabbed a French soldier in the neck, fuelling suspicions it was an Islamist terror attack.

The video appears to suggest that the Paris attack could be inspired by the Islamist murder of a British serviceman in London.

Anti-terrorism investigators now say they have “high quality images” of a “tall, athletic bearded man” aged about 30, possibly of North African origin, praying near the spot where he attacked the 23-year-old soldier from behind with a knife or a box-cutter on Saturday. He then fled into a crowded train station and is still at large.

“He was filmed praying near where the attack took place. After the attack he can be seen leaving the shopping centre of La Défense (business district),” a source close the investigation told Le Parisien.

“The photos have been shown to the other two soldiers who were on patrol with the victim and the four witnesses present at the scene of the attack,” said a source close to the French investigation.

“They all recognised the author of the attack, who wasn’t wearing a djellaba, contrary what some people have said.”

He was reportedly wearing a small hat and dark clothes.

Police are conducting DNA tests after finding a bag near the crime scene with a box cutter, a sheath for a second knife, clothes and a half-finished bottle of fruit juice. [...]

The film shows how the suspects got within two feet of the police’s BMW X5 before being stopped. A policeman inside the car fired his machine-gun through his window at the first suspect, Michael Adebolajo, who was charging at the female driver.

As he was sent sprawling to the ground by the force of the two shots, two officers jumped out to cover him. According to the documentation, they appeared not to see the second suspect, Michael Oluwatobi Adebowale, aiming a handgun at them.

But a third officer spotted him, and he was brought to the ground as six more shots rang out in the suburban London street.

Adebolajo is a 29-year-old British man of Nigerian heritage who converted to Islam about 10 years ago. British authorities said earlier that his family members were devout Christians who visited the local church often, and that he had a brother and a sister. [...]

Drummer Lee Rigby – the soldier killed close to Woolwich Barracks, in south-east London – was “a bubbly character” and “loving father”, the MoD has said.

The 25-year-old, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, had been in the 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers since 2006.

Neighbours on the Langley Estate, where he grew up, spoke of their “shock” and “disbelief” at his death and talked of a “wonderful lad”.

One thought Drummer Rigby had been due to return home soon to see his mother.

(Ynet) British Prime Minister David Cameron said the brutal killing of a soldier who was hacked to death in London by two men shouting Jihadist slogans was a betrayal of Islam.
