Those Who Forget History Are Doomed To Repeat It

FDR’s New Deal ‘Planned economy or planned destruction?’ political cartoon published in the Chicago Tribune on April 21, 1934.

On Wednesday [June 10, 2009] the Trib reprinted the cartoon with the caption “This is a 1934 Chicago Tribune political cartoon that many say rings true in today’s political and economic climate. What do you think?”

Video: SNL Ridicules Obama ‘Are You Better Off Than You Were 4 Years Ago’?

Jay Pharaoh’s portrayal of Obama as a bullshit artist extraordinaire is satirically delicious.

(Mediaite) –In the second installment [Sept. 27, 2012] of SNL‘s special Thursday night shows, Jay Pharaoh‘s President Obama got a chance to speak to a big crowd of supporters in Ohio, with his tradition of rolling up his sleeves “like a weatherman on Friday.” Obama took questions from the crowd, and although the people in the audience complained about their current economic situation, the president spun all of them as truly American success stories.

Obama was awkwardly confronted by a woman who doesn’t like Romney, but kind of expected more in the past four years. The president said that real change takes time, so it’s possible he “might be long dead” before anything actually changes. Obama was bullish about the economy, paraphrasing The Sixth Sense to say “I see employed people.” [...]

In May 2004 Obama attacked Bush by dismissing the 310,000 jobs added that month, which was accompanied by an unemployment rate of 5.6%.

(Real Clear Politics) –“For the past few weeks, President Bush and members of his administration have traveled the nation to celebrate recent improved economic statistics. Well, I’ve been traveling too, all over this large and diverse state. In cities and suburbs, downstate and upstate, I’ve heard from people who say it’s way too early to claim victory when it comes to our economy,” Obama says in the Democrats’ radio address from June 26, 2004.

“After three dismal years of job-loss, we all welcome encouraging statistics,” Obama acknowledges in the 2004 address. “But for most Americans, the health of our economy is measured in a different and more personal way: If I lose my job, where will I find one that pays as well and offers real benefits? Can I afford health-care coverage on my own, or the cost of sending my children to college? Will I ever be able to save and retire with dignity and security? These are the questions I hear hardworking people asking. For them, the basic rewards of a middle-class life, rewards that we once took for granted, have become an elusive dream.”

If that was the case, then yesterday’s jobs report reflecting a paltry 80,000 jobs gain in June under Obama’s watch must be –ABYSMAL! Not to mention an unemployment rate that remains stagnant at 8.2%.

One would think anyways. But not the Obama; the most blame free POTUS evah!

That’s a step in the right direction.”

Oops!:

Back in 2009, Team Obama predicted that if Congress passed its $800 billion stimulus plan, the unemployment rate would be around 5.6% today.

Geothermal Co. [Still] Struggling After $98.5 MILLION Taxpayer Bailout

Nevada Dem Senator Harry Reid’s 2010 prediction that Nevada Geothermal Power will “put Nevadans to work” by becoming the “Saudi Arabia of geothermal energy” fell flat. Not…one…single…job…was…created.

(Washington Times) –A geothermal energy company with a $98.5 million loan guarantee from the Obama administration for an alternative energy project in Nevada — which received hearty endorsements from Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — faces financial problems, and the company’s auditors have questioned whether it can stay in business.

Much like Solyndra LLC, a California solar-panel manufacturer with a $535 million federal loan guarantee that went bankrupt, Nevada Geothermal Power (NGP) has incurred $98 million in net losses over the past several years, has substantial debts and does not generate enough cash from its current operations after debt-service costs, an internal audit said.
……
NPG was rated BB+, which is considered speculative or junk and a step below investment grade.
……
Mr. Reid, a Nevada Democrat who led passage of the $814 billion stimulus bill and worked to include the loan guarantee program to help finance clean-energy projects, predicted in 2010 that NGP would “put Nevadans to work” and declared that Nevada was the “Saudi Arabia of geothermal energy.”

Mr. Chu celebrated NGP’s potential in his June 2010 announcement of the loan guarantee, saying the federal government’s support of the company demonstrated its commitment to geothermal power to achieve the nation’s clean-energy goals.
……
A committee report said the loan did not finance any new construction and “did not help to create a single job.”
……
Mr. Fairbank [president and CEO of NGP] denied knowing or lobbying Mr. Reid, but the House Oversight Committee said Ormat Inc., which was paid $80 million to build NGP’s Blue Mountain plant, has “strong ties” to the senator. It said two former Reid staffers, Kai Anderson and Paul Thomsen, work for Ormat.

1994 Axelrod Flashback: ‘If you claim [economic] progress you frustrate alienated middle class more’

YouTube Preview Image

(BuzzFeed) –The White House is struggling to talk about a weak recovery in terms Americans — who may not feel the recovery — can identify with, and veterans of the Clinton Administration criticized President Obama’s political team yesterday for failing to present a more aggressive plan to improve life for the middle class.

In 1994, Democrats faced a similar challenge, and a C-SPAN roundtable mulled the issue.

One of its members, Democratic consultant David Axelrod, sounded then a bit like the Clintonites do today.

“One of the interesting things about this is that as you cite these statistics that say the economy is improving, you almost do political damage to yourself. If you stand up and claim great progress you’re only frustrating this alienated middle class more,” Axelrod said.

–> Polls: Independents starting to bail on Obama over the economy

In the latest Post-ABC poll, 43 percent of voters express favorable opinions about Obama’s economic agenda, while 40 percent say the same of Romney…

Go slightly deeper into the numbers, and Obama’s economic issues are even more acute. Among electorally critical independent voters, nearly three times as many have intensely negative impressions of Obama’s plan than positive ones

What is clear — and virtually impossible to dispute — is that the American public broadly dislikes Obama’s handling of the economy. In the most recent Post-ABC poll, 55 percent disapproved of the way the president is dealing with the economy, and he has been underwater on issue No. 1 for nearly two years.

CBO: Longest Period of High Unemployment Since Great Depression

After three years with unemployment topping 8 percent, the U.S. has seen the longest period of high unemployment since the Great Depression, the Congressional Budget Office noted in a report issued today.

And, despite some recent good news on the economic front, the CBO is still predicting that unemployment will remain above 8 percent until 2014. The report also notes that, including those who haven’t sought work in the past four weeks and those who are working part-time but seeking full-time employment, the unemployment rate would be 15 percent.
